On the tails of New York Fashion Week, the University of Georgia showcases its talent in a fashion week of its own. At this fashion week, students are the planners, designers, crew and models.

Beginning Feb. 22, UGA Fashion Week gives students with a passion for fashion design the opportunity to showcase their skills, attend panel discussions about the business, and network with each other as well as professionals in fashion.

Rounding off the week, the Fashion Design Student Association (FDSA) is throwing a fashion show, Premonitions, on Feb. 26 in Memorial Hall that will showcase 10 student designers and feature around 30 looks. It will begin at 7:15 p.m. in Memorial Hall with tickets costing $5.

The inspiration behind the fashion show’s theme, Premonitions, is the future of fashion and what each student derives from it, giving them complete freedom of inspiration and design.

“We thought it would give the designers a window to create whatever they wanted within a theme,” said Lucie Reynolds, president of FDSA. “It’s about what our designers foresee the trends in the future to be – whatever direction they think fashion is moving towards or whatever the next big thing will be.”

Fourth-year fashion merchandising and marketing major, Molly Dodd, finds inspiration in the dystopian realm for her fifth and final show with the FDSA.

“I like the autonomy of having the freedom to design whatever you want for the show and meeting other people across campus that are interested in fashion design,” Dodd said.

The FDSA allows students that are interested in fashion design an outlet for expression and learning, as UGA does not currently have an independently standing fashion design program. The student organization gives those students an opportunity to pursue skills and practice.

“This club has given me a good opportunity to learn more about design and sewing,” said Rachel Lewack, a third-year studying marketing with a fashion merchandising major. “They offer sewing classes, and I’ve gotten a lot more knowledge about designers. It’s given me the chance to learn, especially since we don’t have a fashion design department here.”

Cotton Inc. recently contributed a grant to the textiles, merchandising and interiors department at UGA that paved the way for a design lab in Barrow Hall that is complete with sewing machines and mannequins. The FDSA is utilizing the lab to create looks for its fashion show and to further its students’ access to improving sewing and design skills all year.

Because of these advancements, UGA Fashion Week showcases even more impressive design talent from UGA students this year.
